What are the Causes of Excessive Hair Growth and How Can They Affect My Treatments?
The causes of excessive hair growth are many and varied, including:
- Heredity
- Pregnancy
- Glandular and/or hormonal imbalances, including diseases causing these effects (i.e. PCOS condition in women)
- Insulin resistance issues
- Thyroid problems
- Use of some medications
- Normal aging processes
- Excessive temporary hair removal methods that impact the root (like waxing and tweezing)
Before starting treatments, patients with excessive hair growth on uncommon areas are if needed investigated for any underlying hormonal imbalance.Women with facial male-pattern growth are advised to see an endocrinologist to explore the possibility of PCOS or elevated testosterone levels. Men experiencing excessive growth can get tested for insulin resistance. Concomitant management of these condition, improves overall results.
What is Laser Hair Reduction?
Laser hair reduction is a procedure which removes hair from the body utilizing a long pulse laser. Laser hair reduction lasers have been in use since 1997. Laser heat disables follicles from producing new hair. It is increasingly becoming a very popular method of hair removal. The treatment is performed by a specially-trained laser specialist or a doctor (depending on the clinic and state regulations) by pointing the laser device at shaved skin.
How Does Laser Hair Reduction Work?
Lasers designed for permanent hair reduction emit wavelengths of light that are absorbed by the pigment in the hair shaft(melanin), effectively destroying it without affecting the skin ,thus decreasing the number of hair follicles.
Since lasers target pigment, treatments are most effective on coarse hair because it has a lot of pigment and can absorb a lot of heat. Fine hair cannot absorb much heat.
Why is laser treatment better than waxing/pluclikng or threading?
Lasers reduce hairs for good, giving you a long-lasting, even permanent result. In only a few treatments (most dermatologists recommend six to eight to get clearance) we can clear your skin of the unwanted hair that has bothered you for so long. Traditional hair removal methods, such as waxing, shaving, depilatory creams, plucking/tweezing, sugaring, and stringing provide only temporary results — some for fewer than 24 hours. Within hours or possibly days, you are back at it again, hunched over a magnifying mirror to tweeze out facial hair, running a razor over tender skin, or enduring painful waxing. To make it worse, these methods can often stimulate hair growth!
Is Laser Hair Reduction Permanent?
Lasers disable hair permanently as long as the right type of hair is treated with an appropriate type of laser at effective settings. However, it is called a “reduction” because, no matter what some clinics may claim, hair removal lasers cannot and do not remove 100% of the hair in an area. With proper treatments, laser can remove the majority of the coarse hair on a body area, but they cannot remove finer hair. Be cautious of clinics making claims that seem too good to be true. Maintenance sessions taken appropriately help you maintain results achieved.
What is electrolysis?
Electrolysis is the only other proven permanent hair removal method, which has been in use for over 125 years. It involves treating one hair at a time and is a good option for smaller areas where precision is necessary (like eyebrows or upper lip). At this time, it is as the only permanent option for any fine and light-colored hair. However, the treatment is not popular for larger areas as it is painful and can leave post inflammatory pigmentation over the treated areas.
How is laser hair reduction different from electrolysis?
Laser hair reduction is much faster. Electrolysis requires more time because it’s a process that treats only one hair at a time, whereas laser treats many hairs per every laser pulse. Laser hair removal for an area like the underarms for example can be treated in only 20 minutes.
Why does it take so many number of laser hair reduction sessions to reduce an area of excess , unwanted hair?
Hair grows in repeating cycles, and Laser only affects the actively growing hair as these contain enough pigment to absorb sufficient energy to disable the hair follicle. When hair is in the dormant phase, it has little or no pigment, and it cannot absorb the laser light. When you come in to Laser for your treatment, we disable all of the hair follicles with actively growing hair in the treatment area. A few weeks later, some of your dormant hairs will have moved into the actively growing stage, and you will come in for a treatment to disable those. As this cycle gets repeated, you experience increasing reduction of hair.
How many laser hair reduction treatments sessions will I need?
Most dermatologist recommend that it will take six to eight treatments to achieve desired results. We have some clients who are happy after four treatments, and a tiny minority who have needed more than eight. However sessions may vary depending on individual factors like age, underlying hormonal imbalance, PCOS or genetics.
Is it painful?
People have compared it to a rubber band snapping against the skin.We have the painless diode technology that works on principle of supra hair reduction. Compared to waxing the treatment has very little discomfort. It only feels like mild heating. However, since everyone’s pain tolerance is different, if you do find it uncomfortable, we can prescribe a numbing cream for the skin.
Why do temporary hair removal methods such as waxing and tweezing stimulate hair growth?
Waxing, tweezing and depilatory creams are among the top offenders for stimulating hair growth. When a hair root is pulled at or tugged on to remove it, a blood supply rushes to the area nourishing the hair follicle. When this process is done regularly the result is growth of very coarse, deep rooted hairs. Most clients are surprised to learn that years of waxing and/or tweezing have played a role in making the hair growth worse.
How long do I wait between each session? How do I know when to come for my next treatment?
We like to do the first 3-4 treatments within specific intervals (4-6 weeks depending on what area it is) because we like to catch the majority of your hair in its growth cycle and kill it. After you lose more than half your hair, it is wiser to go by observation of new hair growth: when you start to see new hair growth, you can make an appointment within the week and this timeframe will vary from person to person as well as from area to area.
Will I have hair between the sessions? How will I look?
After Laser hair reduction session, the treated hair will shed in few weeks leaving the area smooth and clean. Depending on the area, the skin will remain clean and smooth for around 4 to 8 weeks in total, starting with the treatment date; and the time for your next session will be when you see little fine hairs growing again. By repeating the sessions on time the area will remain hair free throughout the entire multiple session procedure and you will not need to maintain it by shaving, tweezing, waxing etc again.
How soon do I expect to see results? How do I know it is working for me?
You will see results starting with your FIRST few session. The hair growth will be less and the hairs finer and weaker; your skin will become smoother; and the hair pores on your skin will become less visible after each session. The results will become more impressive with each following session.
Maintenance- Will I never get Hair Again?
The laser hair reduction reduces the hair growth in the treated area significantly but the person has to understand that it is hair reduction and not hair removal. All of us have got very fine hair known as the vellus hair throughout the body except the palms, the soles and the lips. The treated area may still require maintenance sessions once in a while ranging from 4-6 months.
Can I shave or wax in between treatment sessions?
During the treatment phase we preferably expect our clients to take sessions regularly and avoid any other temporary method in between the sessions. However, if for some specific occasion, you need to go for a temporary method, you can either go for shaving or threading. Avoid bleaching the hair as it would make the laser ineffective as laser relies on melanin for its efficacy. Waxing should be avoided as it will remove the hair root which is the target for LASER.
What are the risks or possible side effects of LASER Hair Reduction?
Some people may experience the following potential temporary side effects:
- Itching
- Redness for up to 3 days
- Swelling
- Tingling or feeling of numbness
some rare side effects may include
- Crusting/scab formation
- Bruising
- Purpura
- Temporary pigment change (hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation)
What are the precautions that I need to take after session?
After the treatments we advise you to treat your skin with care for the next 24 hours. Taking showers with boiling hot water, sweating excessively, rough exfoliating or products that contain a lot of chemical ingredients should be avoided since they can cause itchy, sensitive skin. After this period of time you can return to your daily habits with no danger whatsoever.
